Green Star

Liberty OneSteel Reinforcing can help meet your the Green Star® steel credit requirements. The Green Star® Rating System, which is tailored for various building types, is a checklist of items that enable architects, designers, specifiers and builders to obtain Green Star® steel credit points on construction projects. Liberty OneSteel Reinforcing can supply customers with the necessary documentation to enable a grant of up to two (2) points under the revised Green Star® steel credit. The Green Star® steel credit aims to encourage best practice steel production, fabrication and dematerialisation of steel in structural applications in Australia.

Liberty OneSteel Reinforcing Green Star Steel Credit documentation

Changes to Green Star Steel Credits came into effect from 29th April, 2010. Changes to the Green Star Steel Rating System now mean that two points are no longer awarded for the use of reinforced content of reinforcing steels.  For eligibility for points, a base criteria is now in place including 95% by mass of structural steel and reinforcing steel used in the building is sourced from Steel making facilities that have a currently valid ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and Steel is sourced from steel makers who are members of the World Steel Association’s Climate Action Programme. In addition, for up to two credit points to be awarded additional initiatives must be undertaken, these include energy reducing processes (PIT), steel meets or exceeds 500 MPa and offsite fabrication techniques. Talk to Liberty OneSteel Reinforcing on how you can optimise your steel use.

Green Star® Letter - Polymer Injection Technology Reinforcing Projects - May 2010

A recent review by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has developed a new set of criteria for  Green Star™ credits to encourage environmentally responsible production, design and fabrication methods  that result in efficient use of steel as a building material. The changes recognise and reward the role of  both steel manufacturers and reinforcing processors. A new prerequisite for achieving Green Star credits on steel is that the steel must come from a  manufacturer that is both a member of the World Steel Association’s Climate Action Programme and has  a valid ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). Liberty OneSteel Market Mills meets both  compliance criteria.

Polymer Injection Technology (PIT)

Polymer Injection Technology (PIT) allows for the allocation of one Green Star point. It is a patented process which partially substitutes the use of coke with polymers, including rubber, as an alternative carbon injectant to produce foaming slag in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel making. This technology has a positive impact on the environment through energy savings, reductions in CO2 emissions and the recycling of polymers.
